The Dark: a palindrome

I’m just The Dark

At night,

Only those too tired to think believe

There is magic in my depths

Hailey Scrivens is an 11-year-old book lover and pencil collector, about to enter middle school. She loves crocheting, drawing, writing poetry, and snuggling up on the couch with her dog, Charlie, and a good book.

Your poem, "The Dark" has such a creative structure where you can read it in reverse and it changes the meaning of the piece. What made you decide on this structure and what did you find challenging and rewarding about writing a poem this way?

My poem, "The Dark," is a palindrome. That means that it can be read in reverse and have a different meaning. I first learned about palindromes at a weekly writing group with my friends. At first, we both struggled, but we were determined to try it out. It was challenging, but at the end, finally creating a palindrome felt very rewarding.

What is your favorite topic to study in school?

My favorite topic in school is either writing or art.

What is the most interesting thing you recently learned?

I am learning to speak French, and something I find interesting about it is how some words sound similar to English words and some, completely different!

What book are you currently reading or read most recently? Would you recommend this book to other readers?

My favorite book is a fantasy series called Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messanger. I highly recommend this book to everyone of all ages who want a little magic in their lives. The story is hooking, and always keeps you on edge.
